FAQ's for Incoming Students

1. How long is the Erasmus program?

The Erasmus program varies between 1 to 2 semesters (6 to 12 months) in each cycle of studies.

 

2. Do I have to pay tuition fees at both universities?

No, in the Erasmus program you only pay the tuition from your university of origin.

 

3. I am a Freemover student, where and how do I pay the tuition fee?

After registering at UP, you must access your profile on SIGARRA and on your page access your current account.

 

4. Where to find and how to search for accommodation?

You should contact the International Office of the central services of the University of Porto through email (international@reit.up.pt). The Social Action Services of the University of Porto (Serviços de Ação Social da Universidade do Porto, SASUP) have some university residences and some are reserved annually for students attending U. Porto under mobility programs and protocols. If you are interested in competing for this accommodation, we suggest that you check the conditions through the SASUP - Serviços de Ação Social. FEP has a partnership with the Livensa Living Student Residence, whereby FEP students get a 30% discount on the booking fee. FEP also established a partnership with the U.hub University Residence at the Asprela Campus, with advantageous conditions for FEP students. You can get more information here. If you want to search for accommodation on your own, we consider the Housing Anywhere and Uniplaces platforms to be reliable and have good options. The search for accommodation, whether referring to University Residences of the University of Porto or referring to private accommodation is up to the student. FEP has no responsibility for managing this need.

 

5. Where can I get support and advice as a mobility student (organizations…)?

The main source of support for FEP in procedural matters is the incoming services of the faculty, via email (erasmus_in@fep.up.pt). In addition, you can also get support through our organization, Linking Students, which promotes various activities that encourage integration between international students and the FEP Buddy Program, where you will have a national student who can assist you in your adaptation process.

 

6. What is the language used in class?

The teaching of classes can be done both in Portuguese and in English. In the bachelor’s degrees there are a restricted number of classes taught in English that are usually the preferred choice for Erasmus Students. FEP has five Master programmes totally taught in English and the two doctoral programmes - PhD in Business and Management Studies and PhD in Economics – are also taught in English.

 

7. Is there a health or emergency helpline? What's the number?

Yes. For police or medical emergencies it is 112. The rest of the emergency numbers can be found here.

8. I need a doctor's appointment, what should I do?

You should contact SRI via email (international@reit.up.pt).

 

9. How can I get a travel pass in Porto?

If you only want an occasional travel pass, you can get it from any metro station in Porto, with no need for anything other than the money for the pass and your trip. If you are interested in a monthly travel pass, which turns out to be financially more advantageous if you use public transport frequently, you have to go to an Andante Shop or STCP counter and take your Passport or Residence Visa and a passport photo with you. The Andante Sub23 gives you a discount for being a college student under 23 years old. The Andante store closest to the Faculty of Economics (Faculdade de Economia, FEP) is located at Hospital São João Metro Station. 9.a) How can I get the monthly travel pass Andante Sub23? If you are under 23 years old we suggest that you take the Andante Sub23, and for this you need to bring, in addition to your identification document and photo, the Andante Sub23 document. The Andante Sub23 document, due to the pandemic, is obtained through a request using Trouble-Ticket in Sigarra (FEP’s system), but you can also send an email to erasmus_in@fep.up.pt.

 

10. What are the best places to taste Portuguese food?

· The best francesinhas in Porto can be found in Café Santiago and Restaurante Lado B (right next to the Coliseum);

· Conga is a restaurant with affordable prices and very tasty food;

· The Gazela Restaurant has interesting and affordable dishes, the most famous of which are the Cachorrinhos da Batalha.

 

11. What are the next events? Where can I find LS events?

You can follow the upcoming events and all the activities that LS is carrying out for you through our Facebook and Instagram.

 

12. Where can I practice sports (extreme sports, gym, volleyball, football ...)?

Each college has teams of certain modalities in case you want to practice sport at the competition level. However, you can consult the website of the Sports Center of the University of Porto that shows and explains the different sports activities taking place at UPorto.

Application procedures:

1. I cannot access the Sigarra UP application module. How can I gain access?

You should contact the U. Porto International Relations Service (international@reit.up.pt).

 

2. My Identification Card / Passport has been renewed, how do I update it on the application?

You must send the new Identification Document (Identification Card, Passport,…) to international@reit.up.pt.

 

3. I completed the application correctly and have the registration done, does the FEP need any more documents?

No.

 

4. Can I also select Curricular Units from another program of study and from another faculty?

Yes, but you should contact the other faculty first and always keep the highest number of ECTS credits in FEP.

 

5. The agreement between our universities does not provide for the 3rd cycle of studies, can I still apply for curricular units in this cycle?

Situations are analyzed individually.

 

6. I can enroll in the Undergraduate's curricular units, but I can't in the Master's curricular units, why?

In the online application, you must access “APPLICATION FORM_3” and add the program. Then, in “APPLICATION FORM 5” you can add the curricular units.

 

7. When do the results of the applications come out?

In the 1st semester the results of the application come out during the month of June and in the 2nd semester the results come out as of November.

8. My registration was completed late; I still don't have a letter of acceptance. What do I do?

You should contact the U. Porto International Relations Service (international@reit.up.pt).

 

9. My university requires the original U.Porto Learning Agreement, how should I proceed? Who signs this document?

FEP signs this document.

Enrollment procedures:

1. Is registration at UP done at FEP?

No. You must register with the U.Porto Rectorate (SRI). You should go to international.up.pt and set up a meeting. During the pandemic, records were made online at the Rectorate and, exceptionally, some records were made by FEP.

2. I can't see my study plan, what's the problem?

Your application has not yet been validated by SRI and / or FEP. You should contact erasmus_in@fep.up.pt.

 

3. I was unable to participate in the Welcome Session, is it possible to go to the Faculty on another day to obtain the necessary information?

The PowerPoint presentation is always sent by email after the Welcome Session.

 

4. What date do I put in the Statement Period of Studies / Placements for signature in relation to the beginning of the school year? The arrival date is confirmed in person or, exceptionally in the pandemic, confirmed by plane ticket or online registration with the Rectorate.

 

5. Where can I register to attend the Portuguese course?

You should contact the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (Faculdade de Letras) of the U.Porto www.letras.up.pt / ple@letras.up.pt.

6. I don't have a student card yet, where should I look?

The International Relations Service of the U. Porto (SRI) sends an email with the necessary information. If you don't receive it, send an email to international@reit.up.pt

 

7. When can I pay for School Insurance?

At the beginning of each semester and after receiving an email from FEP with this information.

 

8. How can I correct my name on Sigarra?

You should send an email to erasmus_in@fep.up.pt.

 

9. I don't have credentials (username and password), when do I receive them? Credentials are sent by FEP by email to students near the beginning of each semester.

 

10. I'm a Dual Degree student, I don't have a password, why?

The password is only issued after enrollment in Academic Services Full-Degree Service.

 

11. How do I enroll in classes?

You will receive an email with instructions.

 

12. I'm a Dual Degree student, I can't enroll in classes, what do I do?

The enrollment in the classes is done after enrollment in the Academic Services FullDegree Service.

 

13. Is class attendance mandatory?

Yes.

 

14. I do not receive documents from the Teachers. Why?

You only have access to the documents after validation from the SRI or you may not be enrolled in the class (send email to SA).

 

15. I have curricular units that coincide at the same time, can I make changes?

Changes can be made during the 1st week of classes in each semester.

 

16. I've already made the changes, but I don't see it in the study plan on the FEP website, why?

FEP and SRI will have to validate this change and, subsequently, FEP's SA will register in the different classes.

17. Can I sign up for grade improvement?

Yes. Up to 48 hours before the exam. The order is placed in the personal area of Sigarra.

 

18. I intend to extend my period of study, is it possible?

It depends on each situation. An evaluation of the academic results of the 1st semester is made and the vacancies that are included in the agreement between the schools are checked.

After mobility:

1. What document do I need to deal with at the end of mobility?

You should contact your home university and deliver or send by email to FEP to sign.

 

2. When do I have the Transcript of Records?

The Transcript of Records is issued 15 working days after the end of the appeal exams.

 

3. Can I return to the country of origin before the Transcript of Records?

Yes.

 

4. My university requires the original Transcript of Records, can you send it?

They are usually sent by email but, exceptionally, if requested by the university, yes.

 

5. I should have had a Grade A and B appearance, why?

There is no direct correspondence between the local grades and the ECTS grades. ECTS grades are computed based on a three-year period sample of records of grades for a specific course. This means that, for a specific course unit, all the results obtained by the students in that course unit are organized, ranked and defined in intervals respecting the percentages of 10% lowest grades, 25%, 30%, 25% and 10% top students, corresponding to the ECTS grades E, D, C, B and A, respectively.

 

6. If you miss an exam, what information will appear in the Transcript of Records?

There will be a record of “RFE – Reprovado por falta de comparência (FAIL – Absence of Examination)”.

7. I plan to do a summer internship, what should I do?

You should contact SDC (Development and Career Service) through the email sdc@fep.up.pt.

FAQ'S for Outgoing Students

1. What are the places where I can carry out mobility?

You can check FEP's list of international partnerships here. Furthermore, you should be aware of the vacancies available for each country and university, which will be included in the application notice. Find more information here. 2. Is it possible to apply to more than one university? Yes, the interested student must, at the time of application, sort the desired destination countries by preference.

3. Is it necessary to know the language of the destination country?

Not necessarily, as a mobility student your classes typically have the option to be taught in English. However, you can always check the language of teaching of the University where you go here in the case of degrees, and here in the case of masters.

 

4. How can I get scholarship/financial support due to the mobility program?

According to DGES, all students who enroll in the Erasmus + program (mobility for members of the European Union) are eligible for a grant depending on the country in question, to help with monetary expenses for transport, food and accommodation. If you enroll in the regular DGES grant and for a student considered to be a SASUP grantee (to support tuition fees and possible travel) in addition to the E+ grant, you are also entitled to a supplementary grant awarded by SASUP to support mobility. 5. Is there a possibility to go back to making Erasmus?

Yes! It is possible as long as it is carried out in different study cycles (undergraduate, masters, etc.).

6. How does the application process work?

All information regarding the process, access conditions, deadlines and selection criteria chosen in the Application Notice, which can be found here. Undergraduate student: The student can apply for mobility opportunities that FEP has protocoled with several universities in the bachelor’s degree, from the 2nd year. The pre-application period usually takes place between December 15th and January 15th of each academic year, and the calls are published on the FEP website and by e-mail. The application deadlines, access conditions and selection criteria are in the Notice for the opening of applications, which can be checked here. Students of the Degree in Management also have the possibility of mobility under the mutual recognition of education with the Faculty of Economics, Administration and Accounting of the University of São Paulo. Students should also check information about the method of conversion, that is, the translation to the scale in use at the University of Porto of the grades obtained in foreign universities during the mobility period. Master's Degree student: Due to the structure of the FEP Masters, the privileged periods for the realization of mobility are the 2nd and 3rd semesters. Applications for the 2nd semester of the first year of the course take place in early September; for the 3rd semester (1st semester of the second year of the course) applications take place between December 15th and January 15th of each academic year, and the calls are published on the FEP website https://sigarra.up.pt/fep/pt/web_base.gera_pagina?p_pagina=1823 and by email. All students who undertake mobility to an FEP partner school located in the European Union are eligible for an Erasmus + scholarship period as long as funding is available. Students who undertake mobility within the scope of double degrees and QTEM have priority in the period of the E + scholarship. The application deadlines, access conditions and selection criteria contained in the Notice that support the applications can be consulted here. Students of the Master’s in Finance and Master’s in Management also have the possibility of mobility under mutual recognition of education agreements or double degree agreements, which will allow them to obtain, in addition to the FEP Master’s degree, a Master’s degree in another renowned international school. 7. Where to find and how to look for accommodation?

If your mobility program is during your bachelor’s degree, you can check the accommodation links for each country here. If it's during the Master's, you can consult it here.

 

8. How to get the European health card?

Through the Internet, via Direct Social Security, just inserting your password or Citizen Card to access the service. Then, click on the option “Sickness” and “Get European Health Insurance Card” will appear, just start the application and fill in the form. The card will come home via mail. In person, in mainland Portugal, it is possible to do this through the Social Security services, in the Citizen Spaces (digitally assisted service for access to Direct Social Security) and in the services of the Health Subsystems (ADSE, etc.). In the Azores, you can contact the services of the Social Security Institute of the Azores, the services of the Health Subsystems (ADSE, etc.). In Madeira, you should contact the services of the Madeira Social Security Institute, IP-RAM and the services of the Health Subsystems (ADSE, etc.). If you are a Social Security beneficiary and apply in person, you must fill in the Mod.GIT 53-DGSS form, available at the Social Security helpdesk or on the Social Security website. The CESD is sent to the interested party's address. Note: In case of impossibility of timely issuance of the CESD, the ISS Attendance Service, IP, may deliver to the beneficiary of Social Security a provisional replacement certificate, which guarantees the same benefits as the card. It is mandatory to upload a copy of the CESD on the mobility page (Sigarra).

 

9. What is the cost of living in the country in question (higher/lower than Portugal)?

10. Where can I get support and advice as a mobility student (organisations…)?

For support and advice during the mobility program, you can contact the FEP Out Office, through this email. There are also some entities responsible for helping students in mobility in several countries, such as the Erasmus Student Network (ESN). In addition, each university has an internal support channel for this purpose.

 

11. Do I have to have tuition fees up to date and be in good standing to apply for mobility?

Yes. Irregular or prescribed students cannot do the mobility.

 

12. Can I apply for mobility if I have a record of communication to the Pedagogical Council associated with inappropriate academic behaviour?

No.

 

13. If the mobility is not to a EU country, what additional documents are required?

If you are going to carry out mobility in Brazil, you must apply for the Medical Assistance Certificate in Brazil (form PT/BR-13) at the Social Security in your area of residence. It is mandatory to upload a copy of the document on the mobility page, Sigarra; If you are going to undertake mobility in Canada-Quebec, you must apply for the Medical Assistance Certificate in Canada-Quebec (form POR/QUE 4) at the Social Security office in your area of residence. It is mandatory to upload a copy of the document on the mobility page, Sigarra; If the mobility country does not belong to the European Union, it must take out a private insurance. After acceptance at the destination university, you must arrange for the visa at the consulate of that country in Portugal, as soon as possible, if possible three months in advance.

14. Do I need an English proficiency certificate?

All partner universities require a certificate of English proficiency. You must obtain it before starting the pre-application process. If you do not have the certificate, you should contact UNAPS-FLUP (unaps@letras.up.pt), as they take monthly language certification exams. You can also take online English certification courses (Linguaskill) or apply for official certification (e.g., TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS).
